                                                                          Area Calculation

At Southwood Flooring Ltd we provide all our prices in square metres (sqm).  We understand that meausremenst are still taken in feet so we have included a conversion calculator to help with your calcuations.

We have also included some guidelines to help when measuring for different types of flooring.
We do reccommend a full measure completed by a professional before commiting to buying any flooring.

          Carpets & Vinyls

Carpets and vinyls are ordered in width and then the length.  They come in standard widths:-

Carpets - 4.00m and 5.00m wide

Vinyls - 2.00m, 3.00m, 4.00m & 5.00m wide

In order to work out the quantity measure the width and length from the widest and longest points as shown below.  You always need to allow for 10cm on each measurement.

Eg - 3.85m wide by 4.25 long would require a piece of carpet 4.00m x 4.35m long - 17.40sqm
          Woods & Laminates

For hardwood flooring you need to measure the area in boxes to ensure the correct area then add a minimum wastage allowance of 5%.  See the diagram below on how to measure.

Eg - 4.25m x 3.25m
3.25m x 0.70m
3.74m x 1.98m
= 23.86sqm + 5% =
24.74sqm needed

Wood comes in pack sizes so you need to check the pack size of the product you like and work out how many would be needed.
            Tiles & PVC Flooring

Measuring for tiles and PVC is the same in principle as measuring for hardwood flooring. Some products also come in pack sizes so this does need me accounted for.

The main difference is that the flooring can be laid in different ways.  There can be borders or tiles laid diagonally.  In cases were there flooring is being laid in this way 10% wastage allowance is required.

PVC flooring can also come in sheets depending on the style chosen.  This is in the safety flooring ranges not the Karndean, etc.

The sheets come mostly 2.00m wide although it can differ.  In these cases the flooring would need to be measured the same way as the carpet allowing for joins on the length.
